Xenoblade Isn’t GameStop’s First Shady “Rare” Game
This week, GameStop came under fire for selling used copies of Xenoblade Chronicles for $90. Their explanation reeks of bullshit and it seems like they were hoarding the copies of the game until the market peaked and then unloaded them. This isn’t the first time this has happened.
Several years ago, the big ticket items at GameStop were used copies of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and, if I remember correctly, a Baldur’s Gate game, both for PS2. The games were impossible to find at GameStops, yet, once in a while several copies of those games would show up at a single location for $80 each. In other words, GS were stockpiling the games and then releasing them to the public. Maybe that’s just the way things work, but it seems to me like they were controlling the scarcity of certain titles, creating demand, and then inflating the prices to reflect that artificial rarity.
GameStop does a lot of shady stuff, including selling used games as new, sneaking pre-orders into unsuspecting customers’ purchases, selling your pre-ordered copy of a game and hoping you don’t show up looking for it, selling their employees’ information to promotional companies, forcing their employees to get paid through a debit card that incurs a fee every time they use it (and GS I’m sure gets some sort of kickback on this), and storing merchandise in the bathrooms. So really none of this should be a surprise.
